Arkansas movers detail how they beat the summer heat

As Arkansas faces heat advisories, people with outdoor jobs are at a higher risk of getting sick in this weather. Here's how one local family is finding relief.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Central Arkansas started the week with an excessive heat warning.

However, life doesn't stop when it's time to move, even when the heat index reaches the triple digits

Movers like the SKS Boys Transportation and Moving Services have learned to work in the elements.

"We're heading to Memphis when we get this one loaded... this one we're taking to Tennessee," Co-Owner Stervin Smith said. "It's going to be a long day for us, but we've been further... it's no big deal."

Smith started the moving and transport business with his three sons, Stervin Jr., Sajoel and Savaughn. All of them, including Smith, have the same initials, hence the business name SKS Boys.

The family is working to build a legacy, but even the heat can pose a challenge.

"It's definitely a blessing to be able to do this with my boys," Smith said. "They're free to take breaks whenever they get ready. We won't lock into them; we're just constantly working. We won't pass out out here, no matter what."

Even their clients like Terri Allen work to alleviate the burden.

"That's why I turned on all the fans; they're doing a lot of moving," Allen said. "I'm not doing much moving now. They're doing a lot of moving and stuff, so want to make sure they stay cool in the house... moving in the summertime is work."

Smith said if you can't beat the heat, work with it by staying hydrated, taking breaks and working strategically, like starting early in the morning.

Despite the heat, there's one thing that makes this job easier.

"Moving can be pretty strenuous," Smith said. "It could be a tough thing. It can be hard, but when we have a good team ready to work and can get it done, it's not so bad... we enjoy helping others."
