LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) -- Traffic on your commute is something you hear about, experience, and sometimes it catches you off guard, but what if you could see it before heading out? A new camera system will allow you to do so.
The Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department has installed about 75 new high definition cameras across the state. Soon, you'll able to access the live feed so you'll know what the roads look like before even heading out your door.
Currently, you can see the flow of traffic using the colored lines on the I-Drive Arkansas site, but a new AHTD system getting ready to launch will allow you to see the live feed for yourself.
“You click on the icon and it tells you what route the camera is on, where its located. It also shows you what direction the camera is facing. You push the play button and the video starts to play," said Danny Straessle with AHTD.
For about $1,000 per camera, at least 75 cameras are installed using the AHTD’s maintenance fund.
“It’s going to be the best looking camera interface in the country,” said Straessle.
Overtime, they'll continually add them in needed areas. The department is also partnering with cities and neighboring states who already have traffic cameras.
To monitor the traffic, AHTD will soon have an Arkansas traffic center.
The new camera system is not available to the public yet. They hope to roll it out on or before labor day.
