LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - Charges will not be filed against a Little Rock attorney who was arrested at the same time as State Rep. John Walker.
On Monday, police arrested both Walker and attorney Omavi Shukur for obstructing governmental operations. Walker was initially filming a traffic stop when Shukur approached him. The two went over towards the traffic stop with Shukur passing between the cars while Walker walked around the scene.
Police dropped charges against Walker earlier in the week, but Prosecuting Attorney Larry Jegley's office decided not to charge Shukur. Jegley and three other attorneys reviewed the dash-cam video and incident reports. The four came to the decision that they could not in "good faith" go forward and prove the obstruction of governmental operations charges against Shukur.
LRPD Chief Kenton Buckner sent an apology letter to Walker which he rejected with a response letter.
"I also cannot accept the disparate treatment of my colleague Mr. Omavi Shukur," Walker said in the rejection letter. "I appreciate your effort to address the matter by providing further training to your officers."
Shukur is the director at Seeds of Liberation as well as working at John W. Walker Law Firm. The organization helps local marginalized communities to better the criminal justice system. The group's goal is to research policies and define what caused the incarceration crisis in Arkansas and find solutions.
