North Little Rock man found guilty for possession of stolen mail, firearm

A 28-year-old North Little Rock man was found guilty of stealing from a postal collection box and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — On Thursday, United States District Judge James Moody Jr. sentenced a North Little Rock man to 95 months in federal prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm.

28-year-old James Miller also received 60 months incarceration for possession of stolen mail and will serve both sentences concurrently along with three years of supervised release.

Authorities said Miller and another man, later identified as Kobe Powell, arrived at Little Rock's Westside Post Office in the early morning hours on July 18, 2022, and stole from a postal collection box.

Law enforcement observed Powell open the box, and when they attempted to make contact, Powell and Miller "fled in a vehicle at a high rate of speed" before crashing into a residence.

According to police, both men were arrested after the crash. When Miller was arrested, law enforcement found a firearm in his possession.

Powell, who was not found to have a firearm, was sentenced to 20 months in prison on September 20, 2023, for possessing stolen mail and a counterfeit check.

Moody ordered Miller to pay $1,650 in restitution after a two-count superseding information was filed on September 21, 2023, charging Miller with possession of stolen mail and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

On that same day, Miller pleaded guilty to the charges.

The maximum sentence faced by the defendant for possession of stolen mail was five years, and for being a felon in possession of a firearm, it was 15 years. The defendant also faced a maximum fine of $250,000.
