SPRINGDALE, Ark. — Nuclear Legacy Week 2024 (NLW24) is now underway in Springdale and the Marshallese community is paying tribute to nuclear testing victims.
What is Nuclear Legacy Week?
According to Marshallese Education Initiative, from 1946-1958 the U.S. conducted nuclear testing on the Marshall Islands. A total of 67 nuclear weapons were detonated through this time period, MEI said.
MEI said this caused "forced relocation, culture loss tied with loss of lands, as well as biological and ecological consequences, which are ongoing." Despite this tragedy, MEI said this part of history is not found U.S. history textbooks and is "rarely acknowledged."
During Nuclear Legacy Week, victims and leaders from all over the world will work to spread awareness through education, activities, presentations, storytelling and more.
From Feb. 27 to March 2 a series of events will be held in Springdale to commemorate this history.
