CRAWFORD COUNTY, Ark. (KTHV) -- One person is dead and an Arkansas State Police trooper was injured following a head-on collision on Interstate 40 near the interchange between Van Buren and Alma, according to state police.
State police say the trooper's police cruiser was hit shortly before 4 a.m. Monday.
The driver of the vehicle that collided with the trooper’s unit died and the trooper was trapped inside his vehicle for nearly an hour, ASP said. Once first responders were able to free him with the jaws of life, he was taken by ambulance to an area hospital.
According to CBS affiliate, 5NEWS, crews on scene identified the trooper as Roy Moomey. Officers said Moomey was trying to stop the other vehicle as it was going the wrong way on the interstate when the vehicles collided.
The name of the deceased driver has not been released.
