Secondary flooding now a concern in city of Conway

The Arkansas River’s rising flood water isn’t just a concern for people living along the river in Conway now.

The Arkansas River’s rising flood water isn’t just a concern for people living along the river in Conway now.

The city issued a Code Red Alert on Monday night, alerting people of secondary flooding issues.

The city’s storm water drainage usually goes directly to the Arkansas River, but with expected rainfall and the river being full the water has nowhere to go.

"It seems like we are getting ready for a repeat of the flooding that happened in 2016," Conway man Chad Jones said.

Jones and his family don't live along the Arkansas River; instead, close to Tucker Creek.

"It seems like it's going to be a mess," Jones said.

"Our drain system will be stressed," Conway spokesman Bobby Kelley said.

During the 2016 floods, Jones said flood waters came about waist-deep into his home, causing $30,000 worth of damage.

"Sheet rock from the waist down came out. All the insulation came out, clothing, toys, all that," said Jones.

Once the city issued a Code Red Alert, Jones started packing up his valuables.

"Make sure everything that is waist level and below is not in the danger zone," Jones said.

Jones hopes others living near the creek will take the threat just as serious.

"Anything along Tucker Creek is going to be impacted, and it seems like it's going to be worse than in 2016," he said.

The city said that with the chance of the storm water drainage system being distressed, others within the city limits should also be aware of the flooding.

"Folks need to expect a lot of storm water standing," Kelley said. "They need to expect areas not used to floods flood."

The city has set up a hotline to answer your questions about flooding concerns.

That number is 501-328-4176. It's open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.

The river is expected to crest near Conway on Sunday, June 2.
