LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - It is America Recycles Day and, on a day, created to raise awareness, homeowners are raising concern about their recycling bins not being picked up.
11 Listens went to find out why.
Homeowners in Little Rock expressed frustration on Facebook after their recycling bins were missed for the second week.
Their bins are placed in an alley between Charles Bussey and Broadway remained full even after they say, they put in a request to the city's 311 service. We talked to sustainability officer Melinda Glasgow, who said she's aware of the problem.
“We report it to waste management who is our contractor. Hopefully, it gets picked up in 24 hours and if it doesn't we ask the citizen to call us back and we will come and collect it,” said Glasgow. When that happens, Glasgow said the city charges their contractor for each collection missed. It's an issue that happens all over the city. “Year to date there have been a little over 2,800 misses that have been reported to 311 for recycling misses and out of 60 thousand households that's a pretty good percentage," said Glasgow.
The reasons for missed pickups often vary.
"There may be a new driver maybe someone is out sick doesn't know the route as well perhaps or on vacation. Or maybe their full and they have to go unload," she added.
Aside from missed pickups, residents also reported stolen bins. “If that happens report it to 311 or the city and they'll get you a new one free of charge in 5 to 7 days," said Glasgow.
Whether your bin is missing or not picked up at all, the city wants to ensure residents that your concerns are a priority. “We're working hard, working with our contractor in ensuring all carts are collected in a timely fashion," she added.
Just a reminder to Little Rock residents to always report issues to the 311 service online, by phone or through its app, where you can even upload pictures. If all else fails, the city said just give them a call.
