Perry County families gather to receive help from Red Cross after flood impact

Red Cross volunteers distributed clean-up kits with important items like masks, gloves, mops and brooms. They also gave out rakes, shovels, water bottles and food.

PERRY COUNTY, Ark — About 50 families gathered to receive help at Stony Point Volunteer Fire Department Saturday, June 15.

Red Cross volunteers distributed clean-up kits with important items like masks, gloves, mops and brooms. They also gave out rakes, shovels, water bottles and food.

Red Cross officials say they are working throughout the state to help people with a variety of needs.

"One of the most visible opportunities of a disaster is really when we're responding and opening shelters, but a really important part is what happens after a disaster and what is life like after a flood and that's where the Red Cross comes in," said Nicole Maul.

"We're in the community for much longer than people actually think and that's providing clean-up supplies, mental health, spiritual care, case work. We know recovery is a long term process, so the Red Cross wants to connect with those folks and give them all the help they can," she said.

Anyone who needs help or would like to volunteer can call 1-800-REDCROSS.
