Arkansas plumbers answering calls after arctic blast

Plumbers around the state have been busy with repairs following Thursday’s bitterly cold night.

MAUMELLE, Ark. — Thursday night's cold weather not only created hazardous roadways, but also caused issues for homeowners as bursted and frozen pipes were common across Central Arkansas.

And the ones people are turning to fix them are answering the call.

In a quiet neighborhood in Maumelle, Ryan Hillman and Nicholas Carey with Clog Hogs are busy with work.

"Today's the second call, and we've had a couple more added on since we've been here," Hillman said.

Those issues look different for many: burst pipes, frozen lines, and no water.

The Wadley family has no hot water after their water heater froze.

"My husband woke up and tried to use the hot water and notified me that we did not have hot water," Franki Wadley said. "This has never happened before."

No water to start the day isn't ideal – that's where Hillman and Carey come in. Up into the attic, we caught up with them as they worked on Wadley's system.

"Cold line feeds into the hot, heats water, and it pushes out the other way," Hillman said. "So with no flow in here, that tells us coming to the heater that the cold line here is frozen."

Despite their best efforts, the Wadleys couldn't stop this from happening.

"We did, we did, but not on the hot water," Wadley said. "Because I had the tankless water heater, I didn't even think about the water heater."

Unfortunately, they're not alone. Multiple other companies have said they had hundreds of calls for service before noon.

While waiting for those coming to fix your problem, there's really only a handful of things you can do.

"I've seen people try to, with heat guns, you know, trying to do it on their own," Carey said.

Thankfully, the area is supposed to thaw out soon and warm up over the weekend. With warmer temps on the way, there's also a better chance of those age-old tricks working.

"Just keep the faucet dripping and your cabinets open," Hillman said.
