FORT SMITH, Ark. — A 25-year-old Fort Smith man has died after a high-speed police chase that ended in a crash at Zero and 31st streets on Nov. 16, according to Arkansas State Police.
ASP identified 23-year-old Kevin Swafford of Paris as the driver of the vehicle. His passenger, Calvin Eubanks, died at the scene of the crash.
An ASP trooper attempted to stop Swafford because he reportedly had no license plate. Instead of stopping, ASP said Swafford tried to flee. During the chase, which began on Towson Avenue, Swafford allegedly disregarded traffic lights while driving at a high rate of speed in areas with heavy traffic.
After running a red light, Swafford reportedly caused a collision with three other vehicles at Zero and 31st streets. According to ASP, only Swafford and one other driver sustained minor injuries.
"The suspect was driving recklessly and putting the public in extreme danger. The citizens of Fort Smith should be able to enjoy a safe Saturday evening," Col. Mike Hagar with ASP said. "Although we regret any loss of life, we thank God other motorists were not seriously injured."
After Swafford was treated for his injuries at a nearby hospital, he was booked into the Sebastian County Detention Center for felony fleeing charges. ASP said additional charges are pending. He is being held without bond.
Swafford's court date is set for Nov. 21, according to booking records.
The Fort Smith Police Department is currently investigating the wreck. ASP said they will conduct an internal review of the trooper's pursuit.
