NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Update: As of 6:00 p.m., the area is once again open to traffic.
The North Little Rock Police Department is currently investigating a shooting incident that happened on Sunday afternoon.
According to reports, the incident happened in the 2300 block of Hwy 161 at around 2:30 p.m. Officers were first called to the scene with reports of there being "suspicious persons" described as juveniles in the area. They were also told that one of those people had a gun.
Once they arrived at the scene they attempted to make contact with the group but they ran off. Officers discovered that one of the juveniles had a semi-automatic gun. As police tried to catch and disarm them shots were fired and an officer was struck.
A separate NLRPD officer "engaged the suspect" and then discharged his service weapon. The 16-year-old suspect was taken into custody and has been charged with one count of first-degree battery, one count of fleeing, and one count of resisting arrest.
He is currently being held without bond at the Pulaski County Regional Detention Facility.
The female officer was taken to the hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries and has since been released from the hospital.
The officer who discharged their weapon has since been placed on administrative leave per the department policy.
The investigation into this incident remains ongoing.
