California Highway Patrol officer Michael Ericson is in critical condition but stable after intentionally being run over by a driver he was trying to help Thursday afternoon.

Sacramento County jail logs list an Austin Scott who was booked early Friday morning on charges consistent with Thursday's incident. Scott is accused of attempted murder, assault on a peace officer, vehicle theft, driving under the influence and evading police in a reckless manner.

Prior to hitting Ericson, Scott allegedly stole a Bay Cities Paving and Grading company truck.

When Ericson pulled up behind the truck on the westbound side of Interstate 80 sometime after 1 p.m., he thought he was preparing to assist a disabled vehicle, CHP officials reported.

While Ericson was walking back to his motorcycle, the suspect backed up the truck, hitting Ericson, before, according to CHP officials, speeding toward Fairfield where he would later be arrested.

Sharon McIntyre, a 12-year veteran of the Sacramento Fire Department was one of the first people to respond to Ericson.

The 17-year CHP veteran would be airlifted to UC Davis Medical Center where he remains.

CHP officials have not yet released the identity of the suspect they arrested yet, but did say more information related to that person would be made available Friday.
