Saline County surrounds family with hope after car accident

The world turned upside down for the Musteen family when they got the tragic news, but underneath the discomfort is a story of togetherness.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — On the surface, it's a story of pain and frustration.

But underneath the discomfort is a story of a community coming together when a family needs it most.

The Musteen family was getting ready for the holidays for their eight kids when the kids' father was hit by a car. Now, they are spending the holidays in the hospital.

Colt Musteen is recovering at Baptist Health in Little Rock after a horrible accident injured him last Friday during his typical afternoon jog.

"I checked his location, and he was about three miles away, so I figured he was about to be heading back towards me," Colt's wife, Bristen Musteen, said. "I checked it in about 10 minutes, and it hadn't moved."

That jog soon turned into a nightmare.

"He had on his reflective vest," Bristen Musteen said. "It was at night, and a car didn't see him, and it hit him."

Along with cuts and bruises, his spine was damaged. The car accident paralyzed Colt Musteen from the waist down, and he had surgery to repair it.

Colt Musteen is now out of surgery and has taken videos to show the community he is OK. In one video, he said the doctors are taking good care of him, and he's eating M&M's.

"He's doing really well with his upper body," Bristen Musteen said. "His fine motor is not where we want it to be, but he's going to start working on that."

Something the family won't have to work on is how to move forward. The Saline County community has ensured this family has everything they need, from presents to meals and prayers.

Those small gestures give the Musteen family hope as Colt Musteen recovers.

"He's going to be a comeback story," Bristen Musteen said.
