LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas — It is the season of giving and maybe the only ones that have been working as hard as Santa's elves are the people at The Salvation Army.
Not only do they help get gifts to thousands of Arkansas families, but their work also goes beyond the bells we typically see around the holidays.
Monday was the first day of pickup for the Angel Tree gifts, and cars lined up to pick up bicycles, coats, and toys.
"We are very much seen at Christmas time with the Angel Trees and our Red Kettles. What most people don't understand is that we do this kind of work 365 days a year," said Major Bill Mockabee, the commander of the Salvation Army of Central Arkansas.
This year, more than 1,000 families will be blessed with gifts for their kids thanks to those who picked up an Angel Tree card.
Each gift bag that a child gets is worth about $150 dollars.
This year, 400 of those Angel Tree cards were not returned. The Salvation Army has been filling the gap by taking money from the Red Kettle fund which totaled to about $30,000.
"Our Red Kettle really sets the pace for what we can do not only around Christmas, but 365 days a year with our homeless prevention pieces and making sure people can pay their rent and utilities so they don't become homeless," said Major Mockabee.
The organization that is dedicated to helping others is now in need of your help.
They are asking for donations to those Red Kettles, and volunteers to help man those kettles around the area.
If you would like to give monetarily or by donating your time, you can text the word, "give" to (501) 376-1111.
