SEARCY, Ark. — The City of Searcy has been awarded a $141,818.18 federal grant to help improve safety conditions for local firefighters.

The funds came from the Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency and the U.S. Fire Administration. They will be used to install a Source Capture Exhaust System (SCES) in each of the city's three fire stations.

The SCES system is designed to prevent diesel exhaust fumes from entering the airspace of the bay area, or the living and sleeping quarters of the stations.

The system captures harmful diesel fumes at the source via hoses attached to the exhausts of fire apparatus, which helps greatly reduce the risk of exposure to these dangerous carcinogens.

"This grant is a crucial step forward in our ongoing efforts to protect the health and safety of our firefighters,” Fire Chief Brian Dunavan said. “By reducing their exposure to diesel exhaust, we can help minimize the risk of cancer and other health issues that are unfortunately prevalent in our profession. We are grateful to FEMA and the U.S. Fire Administration for recognizing the importance of this project and supporting our efforts."

These upgrades will significantly enhance the safety and well-being of both firefighters and any citizens who visit the fire station.

"This funding will allow us to continue to improve the safety of our firefighters,” Mayor Mat Faulkner said. “By investing in the health and well-being of our first responders, we are making strides in our commitment to providing a safe environment for those who serve our community."
