BATESVILLE, Ark. — Update: The school district is still actively investigating the threatening messages alongside local law enforcement.
Two minor situations at individual campuses were reportedly addressed, and officials are continuing to monitor any and all situations closely.
Classes have been continuing as usual, and counselors are available at every school for any student needing support. However, the district added that parents are welcome to pick their kids up at any time today, and it will not count against them.
Guardians have also been asked to closely monitor students' devices and behaviors during this time.
Increased security measures are being implemented after reports of threats toward the Batesville School District and other area schools were made.
The district reached out to parents and informed them of a series of group texts that were circulating overnight, making threats toward schools in the area.
Local and area police departments are working closely with the school district to determine whether or not the threats are legitimate.
The district is taking the potential threat seriously and stated that parents should "use your discretion when deciding whether to send your children to school today."
The Independence County Sheriff's Office released the following statement as they work to investigate the validity of the threats:
"We are aware of screenshots and group text messages with threats against our local schools being circulated in our area via text and social media platforms. We understand everyone’s concerns and are placing extra officers throughout all school districts. We can ensure you that all text and social media posts are taken seriously and are being investigated to the full extent!"
Anyone with information regarding these threats has been urged to contact local authorities immediately.
