Wednesday marks one year since Sherwood cyclist, John Mundell died after a hit and run in Sherwood.
Earlier this month a ghost bike placed in his honor was removed.
John’s wife Kimberly Mundell holds the anniversary near to her heart.
“Today is the one-year anniversary of when John died,” Mundell said.
She said the ghost bike brought her a sense of peace.
“The ghost bike memorial was put at the scene of the incident by the Bicycle Advocacy of Central Arkansas,” Mundell said.
After Kimberly had to deal with another hardship, the community wanted to help honor John by requesting ARDOT to authorize a John D. Mundell Memorial Mile Highway in the area John was hit on Highway 107.
“When my city council member Mary Jo Heye-Townsell saw this on social media she contacted me and she said, ‘let’s try to do this instead.’ And it was her idea and she did all the leg work on this,” Mundell said.
“I was so pleased everyone wanted to be a part of the resolution and it’s actually co-sponsored by all the city council members as well as the mayor.” Sherwood City Council Member Mary Jo Heye-Townsell said.
On Monday, the resolution will be on the Sherwood City Council agenda, then it will go before the Highway Commission for approval.
“It’s so nice that we have something positive that we can focus on and all come together to do something to lift up this tragic moment and do it unified,” Townsell said.
This memorial is also a chance to remind drivers to be careful and look out for cyclists in that area.
“If it causes them to slow down, if it causes them to pause and think, if it causes them to reflect on the fact that we share the roadways, then maybe something good can come from this,” Mundell said.
