LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) -- A taste of Europe is soon to be no more. A staple in the historic Heights district of Little Rock, Silvek's European Bakery is set to close on May 31.
Silvek’s Bakery has been booming for 31 years. By the end of the month, Little Rock will have to say goodbye for now.
The bakery opened its doors in 1985. Owner Sylvester Pupkowski and his wife Irene, originally from Poland, realized after moving to Little Rock that Arkansans like to indulge in sweet treats.
“America is sweet, that’s why we are more bitter.”
Keeping a business afloat for 31 years is a difficult task, but they learned how to keep business by having best-selling products.
“Customers bring you more of what they like and then we were kind of flexible.”
Jenne and James of Cabot come twice a month just to get their fix.
“We said there is a German bakery in here in Kroger? We came down here as quick as we could.”
Silvek says customers like them is what he is going to miss most.
“Keeps me successful, keeps me going,” said Silvek.
When the doors close, the Silveks plan to travel to Poland to visit family, and they hope in the near future his son will open back up for business.
