NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — There's no shortage of good barbeque around Arkansas, where practically every street corner has an award-winning BBQ joint. This week we learned the story behind one that’s unlike the others.
It’s a place that prides itself on the experience as much as the food itself— we’re talking about Ol' Bart Southern Eats at Diamond Bear Brewery.
Earlier this year, Bart Likes moved into the restaurant space at Diamond Bear Brewery with his Southern Eats concept. It’s a southern BBQ joint but with a twist.
You’ll of course find the staples such as pork and brisket, but you’ll also find some unique wild game offerings as well— delicious concoctions such as wild boar, snake, and rabbit sausage. Admittedly, I’m horrified of snakes, but turns out they taste pretty good!
Cooking wild game is central to Bart’s story.
In 2013, Bart’s beloved mother passed away as a result of domestic violence. Less than a year later he was laid off from his job. Understandably, life was difficult, and the pain was palpable.
Around this time, Bart began working as a duck-hunting guide. Wanting to create a memorable experience for his clients, he decided to cook a classic duck camp breakfast.
It turns out, after years of watching his mom cook, he had picked up a few skills he didn’t realize he had. Bart described this experience as therapy.
He credits this critical moment with helping him heal and move forward. To this day you’ll see his mother honored throughout the restaurant.
As word quickly spread of his culinary talent, he was getting booked left and right. As many successful eateries start, Bart initially worked out of a food truck before opening a brick-and-mortar in Conway.
Now, his new space in North Little Rock is offering even more of that “experience” Bart cherishes. You’ll also still be able to enjoy the same Diamond Bear brews that many have come to love!
Ol' Bart at Diamond Bear is located at 600 N Broadway Street in North Little Rock.
