HOT SPRINGS, Ark. (KTHV) - It was a duel between the last two teams standing. Forrest City versus Mena.
"Well I've had chills and tears," Cammie Powell with Special Olympics Arkansas said.
"It was fun," added Kyle Williams.
It was a thrilling, but emotional game. Williams and Zane Sherrer have become more than just teammates; the two are part of Project Unify.
Athletes with and without intellectual disabilities have spent months practicing, with one goal in mind--taking away the championship title.
The special Olympic athletes made history Friday night. It was the very first time they've played in a basketball championship, not to mention the first time they were playing in front of a state basketball championship crowd.
"The crowd here was great. So accepting and warming, cheered for every single goal. It meant a lot," Powell continued.
For many on the court, it was a dream come true. Running up and down the court, with their athlete oath in mind: "Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me brave in the attempt."
Regardless of the team that left holding the trophy, everyone walked away a champion.
