Staying safe while exercising alone | Here's what to know

Running alone is something that can be intimidating and scary for many people. Now, experts are sharing ways to help you feel more comfortable while exercising.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — In September 2022, one woman lost her life after she went on an early morning jog near the University of Memphis campus.

Officials explained how the 34-year-old mother of two lost her life after she was abducted and murdered during the early morning hours.

The tragic death of Eliza Fletcher sent a shockwave across the country. Now, her story continues to keep local runners alert— sparking conversations on ways to stay safe and aware of your surroundings.

"Make sure that you're not walking or running or biking at five o'clock in the morning," said Kerstin Gates, a local walker. "I know the temperatures are great for that, but there's just not enough lighting, and just invites things to happen."

In Central Arkansas, the running community vividly remembers the day that Fletcher was killed. Some runners like Tennessee native Abby Smith, explained how the tragic incident allowed her to take a step back and realize anyone can be a victim.

"She did everything right, and she still was a victim. So it's crazy, and it really makes you stand back and look at yourself and be like, you know, I'm not safe. I need to be vigilant," Smith described.

As Fletcher's story lives on, local businesses have gone the extra mile to teach local runners different ways to stay safe.

Fleet Feet Little Rock is just one of the many local businesses that cater to the running community. One of the ways they ensure safety is a priority is through offering courses that cater to the safety needs of runners.

"They're really designed about running, how to run, learning how to run, how to develop a running program or even a walking program," said Kathy Swanson, a Fit Specialist at Fleet Feet.

Swanson is an expert when it comes to teaching different skill sets about runner awareness.

"Give space or even push away. You don't want to allow them to feel like they have control over you so even if you scream no and push back, push the hand away," said Swanson. "That in itself, is enough most of the time, to discourage someone that would want to try to get close to you or perhaps harm you."

According to athletic experts, here's a list of safety tips you can use to help you stay safe while running alone:

  • Face towards cars and other vehicles while running
  • Avoid listening to loud music
  • Be aware of your surroundings at all times
  • Run in groups
  • Share your location with family members, friends
  • Prioritize open and populated areas
  • Scream as loud as you can to scare a would-be attacker

Swanson also shared that being aware of your surroundings, listening to your intuition, and having a plan are a few ways you can be prepared for anything if you find yourself exercising alone.
