CHARLOTTE, N.C. — One of the key ingredients in sunscreen is being used in more products than you may think. Doctors say new research shows it could be more dangerous than once thought.

Titanium dioxide is in most of the sunscreen you’ll come across this summer, but experts say it might be in most of your food too.

Titanium dioxide is the ingredient in sunscreen that actually keeps the sun rays off your skin. But, a growing number of companies are using it to artificially brighten the colors of what your food, from frozen pizza to Skittles.

There’s lot of debate now over whether it’s bad for you.

Studies in the past found it was OK, according to the Wall Street Journal, which is why it became so popular.

Now, new higher resolution microscopes have been able to find evidence that titanium dioxide has particles that could damage your organs.

The best way to avoid titanium dioxide in your food is to avoid foods with artificial colors. But, as calls to remove the ingredients from your food grow, there is a chance that companies get rid of all together.
