Tensions high at Jefferson County Quorum Court meeting

Monday night's quorum court meeting was filled with a lot of back and forth in Jefferson County as residents were upset about road conditions.

JEFFERSON COUNTY, ARKANSAS, Ark. — The Jefferson County Quorum Court held an explosive meeting on Monday night.

Most of the three-hour-long meeting featured arguing and frustration over how to keep the meeting from becoming a long frustrating argument.

The meeting was standing room only, and several people from the county were there to complain about how badly their roads needed to be repaired. However, they first had to listen to their quorum court go back and forth on how to hold a proper meeting.

Before the full quorum court meeting started, there were a few committee meetings. They were going smoothly until the budget and finance committee.

Some members of the court did not want to approve more money to the judge for road maintenance after they said he had not been financially responsible with the funds.

On top of that, some justices wanted to hold a vote to replace the chairman, which created more friction in the room.

The committee meeting did not vote on a new chairman and they passed several ordinances to go to the full agenda meeting.

When the agenda meeting began several people from the county spoke about how bad the roads are around their neighborhoods— that being the biggest topic of discussion for the quorum court and the people.

The final order of business was the 2022 legislative audit report.

The report showed there were a few errors in the county, including overpaying a road construction contract by 10%.

The judge had to discuss the legislative audit after being found non-compliant with that state law.

Discussion for that lasted about 10 minutes and then the meeting was adjourned.
