Two correctional officers injured by inmates at Varner Unit, one injured at Maximum Security Unit

Two correctional officers were injured after being assaulted by several inmates at the Varner Unit.

GRADY, Ark. (KTHV) -- Two correctional officers were injured after being assaulted by several inmates at the Varner Unit and one was injured at the Maximum Security Unit.

Around 4:20 p.m. Thursday, several inmates assaulted two correctional officers. One officer received multiple lacerations. The other officer had only one injury.

According to the Arkansas Department of Correction, inmates barricaded themselves inside the barracks after the officers were assaulted. Correctional officers used non-lethal force to remove the inmates.

Several inmates were taken to nearby hospitals for evaluation and treatment.

The third officer was injured after being attacked by an inmate in the Maximum Security Unit in Tucker.

All three officers were taken to a nearby hospital. As of Thursday night, one officer had been released from the hospital.
