Pedestrian safety now a focus after UCA student was hit by car while crossing street

The City of Conway has been making pedestrian safety a focus after a UCA student was hit by a car while crossing the street just last week.

CONWAY, Ark. — A student at the University of Central Arkansas was back in class on Monday, after being hit by a car last week.

Regan Belue was crossing Donaghey Avenue, when a car turned and hit her in the crosswalk.

"I cross this crosswalk every day," Belue said. "I just like, at the last second, looked to my left and saw that there was a car like right there."

Security camera footage provided by UCA showed Belue walking up and pressing the button to cross the road. Once the light changed, you could see Belue start crossing the road, when a white SUV turned, and sped up, before hitting her.

Belue is doing alright— with a few bumps and bruises, as well as a concussion. Now, she's offering a reminder to those who are driving through that part of campus.

"You just always have to like, double, triple check," she said. "Make sure to [check] your way is clear before you start turning."

It's a message that is also shared by the city.

"Folks need to internalize that this is the most highly trafficked pedestrian corridor in the entire city," Bobby Kelly, spokesperson for the City of Conway, said.

Kelly said the city has spent millions on improving Donaghey Avenue, from wider crosswalks to improved signage. He explained that because of that, this situation has been even more frustrating.

"It is frustrating, going through all that time and effort and millions of dollars," he said. "Just to kind of chuck it to the side from somebody just being in a hurry."

He said what needs to happen is that the public needs to understand how this intersection works. Belue said she agrees, and that more signage may help.

"Yield to pedestrians, because usually when you see a green light you're like, 'Oh, yield to cars that are, like, oncoming traffic,'" Belue said. "You don't even consider that there's going to be pedestrians walking by, so maybe some kind of, like, signage that says that."
