LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — There are now new developments in the shooting death of a 17-year-old Benton boy that happened back in 2016.
Keagan Schweikle was shot and killed by police eight years ago— but on Monday, a jury ruled in favor of his family.
A federal jury gave a $32-million judgment on the City of Benton and former Police Chief Kirk Lane for their roles in the fatal shooting of Schweikle.
The verdicts cleared the officer who pulled the trigger, Kyle Ellison, but said that both the city and the chief failed to train him and investigate what exactly happened.
When the incident happened in October of 2016, Schweikle ran off into the woods near his Saline County home. His mother called the police and explained that her son was suicidal.
Ellison and some other officers searched through the woods and found the teen with the gun to his head. They then ordered him to drop it.
As Schweikle moved the gun down, Ellison fired at him and killed him.
A judge had previously dismissed the case twice but the appeals court overruled those decisions both times.
Schweikle's parents sued Ellison, the city, and former chief Kirk Lane for "violating his civil rights when he was shot by police."
The jury decided that the city should pay two $15 million judgments in damages to the parents, and they ordered Lane to pay $2 million.
