Voter registration deadline approaching quickly | What to know

The deadline to register to vote is quickly approaching. Now that we're less than a month away, here's what Arkansans need to know.

ARKANSAS, USA — The deadline to register to vote is quickly approaching.

We're now less than a month away from this year's voter registration cutoff on October 7, 2024.

"We've gotten requests from different organizations and churches. I mean, folks are really out there doing voter registration drives," said Terri Hollingsworth, the Circuit and County Clerk of Pulaski County.

That will continue throughout the next month before the October 7th deadline, and  Hollingsworth explained how voter registration has increased.

"For August [there are] 1,722 people [who] have registered to vote. So those are new registrants, which is very good," Hollingsworth added.

Hollingsworth said that about 45 percent of those new registrants are under the age of 30.

"The young people are coming in," she added.

Compared to the 2020 election, she said it is slightly down. However, she expects more to register in September than in August.

"We're definitely going to have more than 1,700 I'm sure within the month of September. As we get closer and closer to the deadline," she said.

UA Little Rock student, Owen Haynes helps organize voter registration drives on campus and is someone who hopes to get more young voices involved.

"I think it's super important that young people know that there's issues that can be changed. If people start voting as soon as they can, right when they turn 18, at the first election they can continue to vote for every election down the road," Haynes said.

To make sure you're registered, you can click here. Then you can put in your information to double-check that it's all correct.

If you recently changed your address, then you get a letter in the mail from the Secretary of State's Office laying out the steps to take to make sure everything is accurate.

The Secretary of State's Office said it's an informational letter that's part of a program to inform voters and make sure that voter registration information is current and up to date.

"If they've gotten this letter and they found that their information is still wrong, then they should please contact their clerk in whatever county they are. Of course, us here in Pulaski County would be happy to help them," Hollingsworth described.

Hollingsworth said there will be an in-person voter registration training on September 12, 2024, that will help groups make sure that they have all of the information that they need to capture on the voter registration form.

Students at UA Little Rock can register to vote both inside and outside of the library on campus on September 17, 2024.

As of this week, the Pulaski County Clerk's office said 236,373 people are registered to vote.

This year's Election Day will be on November 5, 2024. To see a sample ballot for Pulaski County, please click here.
