War Memorial gearing up for Razorback game, expecting huge crowd

With tickets available until the game starts, Meg Matthews, Public Relations Coordinator for Arkansas State Parks and Tourism said they expect a big crowd.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) -- Quite a few people were at the War Memorial box office Wednesday afternoon getting their tickets to the Thursday night Razorback game.

With tickets available until the game starts, Meg Matthews, Public Relations Coordinator for Arkansas State Parks and Tourism said they expect a big crowd. But, with a big crowd comes lots of preparations. One of those preparations is adequate parking availability. Matthews said they are taking lessons learned from the parking issues they had during Guns N' Roses.

"The concert promoter had a lot of impact in terms of how parking was handled and what gates were open and closed," she said. "This is not going to happen at this game because we are going to be in charge and we know how to run the stadium efficiently and effectively."

She said they are also planning for possible inclement weather. For fans that are concerned that rain might impact their ability to sit and enjoy the game, Matthews said the polices stay the same rain or shine. That means no umbrellas are allowed during the game. "Razorback fans are pretty avid fans and so they are willing to put up with a lot," she said. "I do recommend bringing a poncho just in case."

She said they also have a safety evacuation plan in the case of severe weather.

"In the event of an evacuation due to a weather event, UAMS has offered to open up Rick's Armory and so we expect that to be a very safe and efficient way to do that," she said.

New security measures are also a top priority. Chief Ranger Terry Rutledge said they have upped the number of officers this year to about 200 certified officers in the stadium.

The game starts at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Parks and Tourism announced Wednesday they are moving parking lot 10 to the Ray Winder Field lot and Ricks Armory.
