Experts say to wash your car after a big snow | What to know

Running your car through the carwash may feel like a splurge, but experts say it's something we all should do after driving during winter weather.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Now that the rain has moved out of the area, more people have been rolling into the carwash.

It's what experts recommend for people to do after driving on salt-covered roads during the winter weather. The wash can also save you some money in the long run.

"We're staying relatively busy right now. I think it's just going to continue to get busier as the week goes along," said John Aaron Rees, Genesis Auto Wash Owner.

Rees said it's a good thing to see after being closed for several days due to the freezing temperatures and rain shortly after that.

However, it's not just good for business, it's also good for your car.

"The salt and all the sand has been thrown out on the streets from the ice the previous week. You want to get that off as soon as possible," he explained.

If you don't wash it off, it could be problematic.

"The biggest thing is corrosion. And then obviously, you know, it just really affects the hardware under the car," said Paul O'Hara, Mechanic and Owner at Paulie's.

He also explained that those repairs could be costly.

"We could easily double the labor which we don't like to do. We don't want to do it. That's why we're telling you to spray it off. Get it off your car," O'Hara added.

O'Hara also explained how once a little bit of rust forms, it can easily spread.

"We're worried about suspension components, braking components, drivetrain, all your hardware under there," he said.

That's why he likes to get his car washed immediately after the snow melts.

"I don't want rust or corrosion under my car," he said.

As far as the wash business goes, Rees expects more customers to roll in.

"It's pretty steady. You can feel the winter weather people coming in for about a month period," he added.

Rees said after it snows, they typically see up to three times the normal volume of cars coming through the wash.
