A Little Rock man has filed a petition asking the Pulaski County Circuit Court to stop the city from closing down War Memorial Golf Course.
The closing of the golf course is part of the budget deal passed by the city board of directors last month that closes a deficit and saves $2 million.
Earlier in the month, Mayor Frank Scott Jr. said, “We can't sustain four golf courses in the city of Little Rock. We can sustain two.”
John McCarty, who's part of the War Memorial Golf Association, wants an injunction until the Arkansas State Department of Heritage finds out whether or not the golf course is added to the national register of historic places.
This week, the Arkansas Heritage Department verified the golf course qualifies to be a historic place, but it needs the City of Little Rock's permission to move ahead with the national registration process.
When asked for a response, the city said they haven't received the complaint yet.
Mayor Frank Scott Jr. said, "While we have a practice of not commenting on pending litigation, I want to make sure Little Rock residents know that while it is difficult for some to accept, continuing golf course operations at War Memorial Park was not fiscally responsible. I am focused on making it, one of our biggest multi-use park assets, a place all residents can use and enjoy."
