California's Prima Wawona has voluntarily recalled it's bulk/loose peaches due to potential Salmonella contamination.
According to a food safety alert issued Thursday, 78 people from 12 states have been infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Enteritidis with illnesses starting from June 29 to August 3. At least 23 people have been hospitalized.
Several stores have already recalled the peaches including Aldi, Food Lion, Hannaford, Kroger (and it's affiliated retailers), Russ Davis Wholesale, Target, Walmart and Wegmans.
The peaches were distributed and sold in multiple forms including in bulk and individually from June 1 to August 19.
Of the cases reported so far, Minnesota has the most with 23 followed by Michigan with 17. New York has 9 cases, Iowa has 8 cases, New Jersey has 7 cases, Wisconsin has 5 cases, Virginia has 3 cases and Pennsylvania has 2 cases. Connecticut, Kentucky, Maryland and Missouri all have 1 case each, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Health officials recommend throwing out or returning fresh, whole peaches supplied by Wawona Packing Company. People are also urged not to eat them. Other peaches (including frozen or canned peaches) are not known to be affected. Fresh peaches supplied by other companies are also not known to be affected.
Consumers who are unsure whether the peaches they bought are supplied by Wawona, they should contact the retailer where they were purchased. If there is doubt about where their peaches came from, health officials say they should be thrown away.

Symptoms of salmonella infection include diarrhea, abdominal pain and fever. Symptoms usually begin within 12 to 96 hours after exposure, but that time frame can be as a long as two weeks.
Infections usually clear in five to seven days, but state health officials say about 28% of laboratory-confirmed cases require hospitalization.
