LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders has signed an executive order aimed at providing relief for those impacted by Hurricane Helene in September.
According to the press release from Gov. Sanders, $750,000 will be distributed the Governor’s Disaster Response and Recovery Fund — these funds will be used to aid recovery efforts in North Carolina and Florida following the damage caused by Hurricane Helene earlier this year.
Gov. Sanders said that the funds will be used at the "discretion of the Director of the Arkansas Division of Emergency Management" and that the funds will be reimbursed later by Florida and North Carolina as part of the Emergency Management Assistance Compact (EMAC) system.
"Hurricane Helene caused an emergency situation in several states, which began on September 26, 2024, and continued with such severity that the EMAC was activated, and action was warranted to alleviate hardship and suffering from emergency response support," Gov. Sanders said in a press release.
The EMAC system is an organization designed to streamline disaster aid between states in a way that's both quick and efficient. In the governor's words, the EMAC system is "a congressionally ratified organization that provides form and structure to interstate mutual aid."
