LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Frank Scott Jr. has successfully been re-elected as Little Rock's mayor after Steve Landers officially conceded the race.
As of 11:00 p.m., Scott had around 50% of the vote while Landers was around 38%.
The race has been highly competitive, as Mayor Frank Scott's re-election bid has been marred in criticism and a record-high number of homicides in the city.
Although the race is nonpartisan, Scott has received attacks from the right for the rise in violent crime. Landers, who labels himself as independent, has donated to several Republican candidates and some Democrats, according to the Associated Press.
Landers has also received backing from former Governor Mike Huckabee's political action committee, in addition to other Republican groups.
Although Scott has received criticism for how the city has handled crime, he has touted that Little Rock has seen a 6% reduction in overall violent crime for the year.
"We've created a true short-term and long-term plan of action, that's the reason crime is down 6%," Mayor Scott said during a mayoral forum. "[Crime] is not a quick fix, we're dealing with issues today that happened 15 years ago."
Both Scott and the police department have indicated that the homicides are driven by domestic violence rather than the gang activity that the city saw in the early 90s.
The other candidates, Greg Henderson and Glen Schwarz, failed to qualify for the runoff. Henderson received roughly 8% of the vote.
