North Little Rock School District urges voters to approve millage increase

North Little Rock voters will decide whether to approve a millage proposal, which backers say will transform the city's schools. Here's what to know.

NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — The North Little Rock School District is making your paper ballot a reality.

On Thursday, the North Little Rock School District opened the historic Ole Main building's doors to give voters a real-life representation of what the school is asking people to vote on this election season.

The district is proposing a millage increase that Superintendent Gregory Pilewski said would fund three projects.

"The first one is to build a brand-new middle school campus, which is very exciting," Pilewski said. "The second one is to renovate Ole Main, and the third is an indoor sports complex activity center."

It's all a part of a capital improvement project with a multi-million-dollar price tag.

Voting yes to this on the ballot means those living in North Little Rock would pay increased property taxes on their personal property, such as boats, vehicles, or even four-wheelers.

"The best way that we describe that is if you had a home that was worth $100,000 at 20% of that assessed value, that's about $80 a year or $8 a month," Pilewski said. "We equivalent that to a latte, if you will, at Starbucks, and that cost of that one cup of coffee a month will help fund these three projects."

Pilewski said the school also created 3D renderings to show what each project would possibly look like for those who want an in-depth vision of each mill.

On Nov. 5, voters will decide whether to raise the millage rate by four mills.

The current total mills sit at 48.3, but with the proposed increase, it would be 52.3.
