Race for Arkansas Supreme Court chief justice heading to runoff

Here is who won the two Arkansas Supreme Court races for chief justice and associate justice.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — While many Arkansas voters will be going to the polls to vote for who they want to be the Democratic and Republican presidential nominations, the most important vote for people in the state will be deciding two justice races for the Arkansas Supreme Court.

If both races are won by the sitting justices it means Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders will get to appoint two new justice to the court.

We will update this article when one or both races have been called.

Chief Justice

Four people are in the race to decide the next chief justice for the state's highest court. The race is between Justice Karen Baker, Justice Barbara Womack, Justice Rhonda Wood, and Jay Martin.

As of 10 p.m. on March 5, the race is razor thin with Wood, Baker, and Webb all competing for the top two spots.

If no candidate can win a majority, the top two in the race will go to a runoff that will be held in November.

And if one of the three justices win they will make history as the first woman elected as the state's chief justice.

Associate Justice, Position 2

In this race, Justice Courtney Hudson will face off against Judge Carlton D. Jones. The two are running to replace Justice Cody Hiland, who Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders appointed to the court in 2023.

If Jones wins, he will become the first Black justice on the Arkansas Supreme Court as well as the first Black statewide elected official in Arkansas since Reconstruction, according to the Associated Press.

But in the end, Justice Courtney Hudson won the race, according to the Associated Press.
