Republican Asa Hutchinson won't pardon Trump if he's convicted

After Nikki Haley and Ron DeSantis declared they would pardon the former president, Hutchinson said he will "not make that commitment."

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson said on Monday that he would not pardon Donald Trump if he was convicted.

Hutchinson, who is one of many Republicans vying for the 2024 GOP nomination, said on social media that pardoning the former president "undermines the principle of equal justice."

"Despite the pledge of Haley and DeSantis to pardon Donald Trump, I will not make that commitment," he said. "It is wrong to promise pardons to score political points and it undermines the principle of equal justice."

His comments on Trump comes after Republicans Nikki Haley and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis have said they would pardon him.

Haley claimed that pardoning Trump would be in the "best interest of the country, so that we can move on as a country and no longer talk about him."

DeSantis also echoed the same sentiment saying the country has to "move on" and that "the divisions are just not in the country's interest."

The three Republican presidential candidates are all trailing Trump significantly who holds a strong lead in all polls ahead of the Jan. 15 Iowa caucus.

Trump is currently facing at least four criminal cases that amount to 91 criminal charges. Among the charges include two federal indictments related to classified documents and attempts to overturn the 2020 presidential election. Trump lost that election with only 46.8% of the vote.
