WASHINGTON, D.C., USA — A doctor with Arkansas ties has been slated to serve as the U.S. Surgeon General for President-elect Donald Trump's Administration.
Dr. Janette Nesheiwat, a general practitioner in New York, has been tapped for the role. She currently serves as a medical director for CityMD, a network of urgent care centers in New York and New Jersey, and is a contributor to Fox News.
Her Fox News bio said that she is "disrupting the healthcare industry by providing immediate access to care."
"Throughout her career in medicine, Dr. Nesheiwat has led various medical relief missions around the globe with the American Red Cross, including in the aftermath of Haiti’s catastrophic earthquake in 2010," Dr. Nesheiwat's bio said. "A graduate of The University of South Florida, she completed her medical residency at University of Arkansas Medical Center in Fayetteville and completed ER rotations with Johns Hopkins University."
Dr. Nesheiwat boasts a history in the Natural State, having graduated from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and previously serving as a physician at Washington Regional Medical Center and Northwest Medical Hospital.
Trump said in a statement on Nov. 22 that Dr. Nesheiwat has "an unwavering commitment to saving and treating thousands of American lives."
"Dr. Nesheiwat is a fierce advocate and strong communicator for preventive medicine and public health. She is committed to ensuring that Americans have access to affordable, quality healthcare, and believes in empowering individuals to take charge of their health to live longer, healthier lives," the statement said.
Trump applauded Dr. Nesheiwat's work "on the frontlines" in New York City during the COVID-19 pandemic and across the country after natural disasters like the Joplin tornadoes and Hurricane Katrina.
The President-elect also noted that Dr. Nesheiwat comes from humble roots:
"Dr. Nesheiwat's journey began with humble roots as one of five children raised by a widowed immigrant mother who worked as a nurse," the statement said. "Inspired by her mother's resilience and compassion, Dr. Nesheiwat pursued a life of service, transforming her deep-seated desire to help others into a distinguished medical career."
