Gov. Sanders orders flags at half-staff to mourn lives lost during Memorial Day storms

After several tornadoes ripped through Arkansas and took 10 lives on May 26, Sanders is ordering flags at half-staff.

BENTON COUNTY, ARKANSAS, Ark. — Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders has ordered flags at half-staff in honor of those that died after multiple tornadoes struck Arkansas on May 26.

In an order sent by Sanders' office on May 31, the governor details the tragedy of that weekend that upended hundreds of lives and killed several people.

The Arkansas Division of Emergency Management and Sanders' office says that 10 people died as a result of those storms across Baxter, Benton, Boone, and Marion counties.

The U.S. flag and the state flag will be flown at half-staff across Arkansas from sunrise to sunset on Sunday, June 2, one week after the storms.

"In the early morning of Sunday, May 26, 2024, severe storms and tornadoes caused significant damage to communities in northern Arkansas," the order said. "Arkansans in these communities lost homes and businesses and sustained considerable property damage. Cleanup from the disaster is ongoing and will take significant time to complete."

Nearly a week after the storms, Arkansans are still working to pick up the pieces. Hundreds of people, some from out of state, are working to clear roads, restore power, and remove damage.

"Arkansas’ first responders have worked day and night to clear roads, repair public infrastructure, and rescue stranded people. They have been assisted by first responders from surrounding communities and states," the order said. "Federal, state, and local leaders have worked hand-in-hand to secure aid for impacted communities and provide any assistance possible."

Sanders adds that many Arkansans sustained physical and emotional trauma from the storms.
