Michigan beats Washington to win first national championship since 1997

The Wolverines' rushing attack and defense was too much as they beat Washington 34-13 to win the national title.

HOUSTON — Michigan defeated Washington on Monday in the College Football Playoff national championship 34-13. It's the Wolverines first national title since 1997.

Michigan rushed for 303 yards and forced two Huskies turnovers to propel them to the win. Running backs Blake Corum and Donovan Edwards each ran for two scores.

Here are highlights and updates as they happened throughout the game.

11:10 p.m.

Michigan defeats Washington, 34-13, to win its first national championship since 1997.

10:58 p.m.

Following an interception by Michigan's Mike Sainristil, the Wolverines add another touchdown from Blake Corum to take a 34-13 lead with 3:37 remaining in the game.

10:44 p.m.

Michigan running back Blake Corum runs for a 12-yard touchdown to give the Wolverines a 27-13 cushion with 7:09 left in the fourth quarter.

10:21 p.m.

At the end of the third quarter, Michigan leads Washington, 20-13.

9:56 p.m.

Washington responds with a field goal on their next drive. They trail Michigan, 20-13 with 8:58 remaining in the third quarter.

9:48 p.m.

Following an interception by Will Johnson to begin the third quarter, Michigan adds a field goal to extend their lead, 20-10. 11:55 remaining in the third quarter.

9:18 p.m.

At halftime, Michigan leads Washington 17-10.

9:11 p.m.

Washington scores their first touchdown of the game with less than a minute left in the first half on a Michael Penix Jr. 3-yard passing touchdown to Jalen McMillan. Michigan leads 17-10.

8:35 p.m.

Michigan adds a field goal to begin the second quarter. They lead 17-3 with 13:28 remaining in the first half.

8:20 p.m.

Donovan Edwards finds the endzone for the second time in the first quarter. A 46-yard rushing touchdown by the running back extends Michigan's lead to 14-3.

8:14 p.m.

Washington responds with a field goal to make it a 7-3 Michigan lead. 3:56 remaining in the first quarter.

7:52 p.m.

Michigan strikes first on the opening drive of the game. Donovan Edwards with a 41-yard touchdown run to give Michigan a 7-0 lead with 10:14 remaining in the first quarter.

7:45 p.m.

Washington wins the coin toss and elects to defer to the second half. Michigan will begin with the ball on offense. 

5:15 p.m.

Michigan arrives at NRG Stadium in Houston for the game.
