FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Arkansas dominated time of possession and minimized mistakes to upset No. 4 Tennessee 19-14 at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium in Fayetteville on Saturday.
The Razorbacks (4-2, 2-1 SEC) returned home for just the second time in six weeks and kept the Volunteers' top-ranked scoring offense in check during the first half. Entering the game, Tennessee averaged 54 points and 565.8 yards per game.
Arkansas shut out the Volunteers (4-1, 1-1 SEC) and held them to just 77 yards in the game's first 30 minutes. However, the Hogs couldn't capitalize on the defense's strong play.
Kicker Kyle Ramsey nailed a 20-yard field goal on Arkansas's first possession, but those were the team's only points of the first half despite controlling the ball for 20:42 and racking up 221 yards.
Tennessee started putting together positive drives, down 3-0 in the third quarter. Running back Dylan Sampson, the SEC's leader in rushing touchdowns, opened the second half with a 53-yard run before scoring from four yards out to put the Volunteers ahead 7-3.
Four minutes later, Sampson found the end zone again on a four-yard run, extending Tennessee's lead to 14-3 with 8:18 to play in the third quarter.
Needing a momentum shift, Arkansas answered back with a two-yard rushing touchdown by running back Ja'Quinden Jackson, capping an eight-play, 75-yard drive to cut the Volunteers' lead to 14-10.
In the fourth quarter, the Razorbacks drove down the field as kicker Matthew Shipley made a 22-yard field goal, bringing the score to 14-13 with 12:06 left in the game.
Arkansas quarterback Taylen Green went down with an injury, and redshirt freshman Malachi Singleton led a game-winning drive as he ran 11 yards for a touchdown to give the Hogs their first victory over an AP Top 5 team since 2007.
Arkansas has the next week off and will return to action at home against LSU on Oct. 19. Kickoff time and broadcast information will be announced later.
