Flight cancellations impacting Arkansans

Due to the extreme winter weather, Southwest Airlines canceled thousands of flights— and many people across the country, including Arkansas, have been impacted.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — The recent freezing temperatures have impacted many parts of the country, including Arkansas.

According to data from flight-aware, by 7:00 a.m. on Tuesday morning, Southwest canceled over 60 percent of its schedule.

Some travelers at the Clinton National Airport were experiencing cancellations over and over again— so they've taken matters into their own hands to get to where they need to be.

"This kind of scarred us a little bit. So we may not be doing it for a while," Mercedes Trent said.

Mercedes Trent said that she experienced several flight cancellations with Southwest Airlines before arriving in Little Rock on Tuesday.

"From Orlando to Little Rock. Our flight was canceled to Atlanta, we were gonna have a layover there that was canceled. Then they moved us to another flight that was canceled. And then we were moved to another flight later on today that was canceled," Trent described.

She explained that the only way she could get to Little Rock was by switching to a different airline.

"The next flight was going to be January 1, was the next time that they were going to be able to get us out," she added.

Trent said that her bags are still in Orlando and there's no telling when she will get them back.

"When we were in Orlando this morning, we talked to the baggage people there. And they said that they had over 8,000 bags out on the tarmac from the last day. So I'm sure that they're lost in the sea of bags are now," she said.

Will Tucker also experienced cancellations ahead of Christmas.

"We rented a car and just drove home from Dallas. Back to Little Rock. My fiance' got her bags a couple days later. My bag is still currently in Houston. I don't know how it ended up in Houston. But it's in Houston. And they don't anticipate that it'll be here before the week is over," Tucker explained.

Southwest apologized in a statement that said in part, "With consecutive days of extreme winter weather across our network behind us, continuing challenges are impacting our Customers and Employees in a significant way that is unacceptable. And our heartfelt apologies for this are just beginning."

The airline also said it will continue to operate with a reduced schedule by flying roughly one-third of its schedule for the next several days.

"It's crazy, the great the great cancellation," Tucker said.

Trent and Tucker both explained that they've tried reaching out to Southwest for help, but the line is always busy— and they have had a hard time getting ahold of somebody.

Rental Car companies at the Clinton National Airport said that they've seen a massive increase in one-way car rentals during the recent flight cancellations.
