Storms to produce severe weather in Arkansas ahead of Memorial Day | What to know

It's been an active week for weather in Central Arkansas, and the holiday weekend holds more potential for strong to severe storms. Here's what to expect.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Another chance of thunderstorms are expected Sunday afternoon and evening in Central Arkansas, but then sunshine is on the forecast for Memorial Day. Here is everything you need to know about the latest THV11 forecast.

What to expect

Strong storms are possible once again on Sunday afternoon and evening as a cold front finally moves through Arkansas.

There’s another chance of strong to severe thunderstorms on Sunday afternoon and evening as a cool front moves through the state. Storms could produce damaging wind gusts and large hail.

The tornado threat is there as well, but it is low. The best ingredients for severe weather will be over northeastern portions of Arkansas. Behind the front, drier air will move in for Memorial Day.

The timing of the next round of storms means a few could occur in the late afternoon over portions of eastern Arkansas. Then, a broken line storms ahead of the front may initiate over the River Valley around late evening. Storms will then move southeastward over the next few hours leaving by early Monday morning.

Any storm has the potential to produce high winds and large hail. Also, it is a popular weekend to enjoy outdoor activities, so remember that a storm does not need to be severe to produce a deadly lightning strike.

Lightning can travel ten miles away from the storm. There can be a deadly lightning strike before and after the rain. The best rule to follow is when you hear thunder, stay indoors until you don't hear thunder for about 20 minutes.
