Strong to severe storms likely on Halloween

Strong to severe storms are likely on Halloween as a passing cold front will produce storms across Arkansas on Wednesday night and into Thursday morning.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Due to a marginal to slight risk of severe weather, a THV11 Weather Impact Alert has been issued for Thursday, October 31, 2024.

The alert will be in place from midnight Thursday and run until about 9:00 a.m. Thursday morning.

Many people have outdoor plans on Halloween night, so here's what you need to know about potential impacts for the days ahead.

When should I expect severe weather?

As a cold front moves through the state, storms will be capable of producing damaging wind gusts, large hail, and even tornadoes.

Storms could move into Northwest Arkansas as early as Wednesday night, but Thursday (pre-dawn) will be the most likely time that these storms will impact Central Arkansas.

However, the good news is that rain is expected to clear just in time for trick-or-treating on Thursday evening.

How could the storms impact me?

Any storm has the potential to produce high winds, large hail, or a possible brief tornado.

If you have any outdoor plans, you should keep in mind that a storm does not need to be severe to produce a deadly lightning strike, and lightning can travel 10 miles away from the storm.

There can be deadly lightning strikes that occur before and after the rain. The best rule to follow is when you hear thunder,  you should stay indoors until you don't hear thunder for about 20 minutes.
