SHERIDAN, Ark. (KTHV) - It hasn't happened in decades, but last night a small earthquake rattled parts of Grant County.
If you live in Sheridan and think you may have felt a shake just after midnight on Thursday, you weren't dreaming. A 2.6 magnitude earthquake was reported seven miles southwest of town and it's something that the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said they will be monitoring the area closely.
Sheridan resident Darrel Kellebrew said he didn’t feel the quake at all. This was the case for most people who live in Grant County.
"My brother text me at 10:36 a.m. from Wisconsin and wanted to know if I had felt it or not," he said. "[He] said Caroline Ashcraft had put it on Facebook and I didn't feel it all. I was at home."
More than a dozen people reported the quake to the survey. They said they felt shaking they believed to be associated with the quake. The responses said they felt weak to light rumbling.
"He asked me if I had felt the earthquake and I texted back, 'What earthquake,'" said Kellebrew.
USGS said quakes below 3.0 in magnitude generally aren't felt except for a few under favorable conditions. Scott Ausbrooks, Assistant State Geologist, said earthquakes in that part of Arkansas are not unheard of, but still remain unusual.
But Kellebrew said he isn’t worried about the earthquake.
"It don't concern me at all. Not in Sheridan," he said.
USGS said there were a swarm of earthquakes in the 1974 near Arkadelphia, but it's unlikely for this part of Arkansas to see earthquakes. They also said there was a larger earthquake near Rison back in the early 1900's.
