Sen. Cotton invites Chief Justice Roberts to 'resign' after DACA ruling

Senator Tom Cotton released a statement after the Supreme Court ruled rejected the Trump administration's claim that DACA program is illegal.

WASHINGTON, D.C., USA — U.S. Senator Tom Cotton has invited Chief Justice John Roberts to resign and run for office if he believes "his political judgement is so exquisite" after the Supreme Court rejected the Trump administration's claim that the DACA program is illegal.

On Thursday, the Supreme Court rejected the administration's effort to end legal protections for 650,000 immigrants who are covered under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Program (DACA).

Roberts, who was joined by justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Stephen Breyer, Sonia Sotomayor, and Elena Kagan, said that the Trump administration "failed to consider the conspicuous issues of whether to retain forbearance and what if anything to do about the hardship to DACA recipients.”

In response to the ruling, Cotton said in a press release that, "It cannot be the law that what Barack Obama has unlawfully done, no president may undo."

"Yet John Roberts again postures as a Solomon who will save our institutions from political controversy and accountability," Cotton said.

Cotton then suggested if Roberts' "political judgement is so exquisite," he should resign and get elected.

"I suspect voters will find his strange views no more compelling than do the principled justices on the Court," Cotton claimed.

The four conservative justices, Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh, all dissented. One dissent said DACA was illegal the moment former President Barack Obama created the program in 2012.

Kavanaugh wrote in a separate dissent that the Trump administration acted appropriately by trying to end the program.

President Donald Trump has called the recent rulings by the Supreme Court "politically charged decisions" that are "shotgun blasts into the face of people that are proud to call themselves Republicans or Conservatives."
