City of Conway prepares in advance for possible flooding brought by Barry

The City of Conway has prepared for possible flooding from Barry all weekend.

CONWAY, Ark. — The City of Conway has prepared for possible flooding from Barry all weekend.

"Emergency services like our fire department, our transportation department, and our physical plant and also sanitation have been working with the mayor's office over the weekend," the City of Conway Spokesperson Bobby Kelly said.

But, a lot of their preparation began months ago.

"Thanks to our robot, we have cleared a lot of stuff from our downtown culverts," Kelly said.

They've added more drainage inlets and increased their capacity to get rid of stormwater and are optimistic they'll be very prepared for any flash flooding.

"We can put up barricades as much as we want, but we've been working for the past year and a half," Kelly said.

Barricades are also ready to go.

"The fire department has already pre-stationed barricades in downtown Conway to shut down roads if that happens," Kelly said.

If you live in an area that typically floods, you'll probably see barricades near your street.

"Our transportation department is ready to go on South German Road with our permanent gate out there. And folks who live out there near Nutters Chapel Road, I mean it always floods out there and there's nothing we can really do about it, but we've also pre-stationed barricades out there," Kelly said.

There are also things you can do around your home to prevent drainage issues.

If you live near a culvert, make sure there is no trash or debris inside of it.

Also, make sure there is none on your street where it can wash inside.

If there is an issue, you can call the City of Conway at 501-450-6165.

The city also is ready to keep water out of buildings.

"Our Department of Sanitation is ready to go with sandbags if we need them," Kelly said.
