Little Rock police release more details on fatal shooting by officer

Police have released the names of the officers involved in the fatal shooting of a man they said was reaching for a gun.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — The Little Rock Police Department released the names of the two officers who were involved in the fatal shooting of a man at Days Inn near the Arkansas State Police headquarters on Monday, Dec. 11.

Police were originally called to the Days Inn motel at 8219 I-30 around 3 p.m. regarding a shots fired call, with officials saying somewhere between four or five shots were fired by someone.

Another call came in around the same time saying a person had a gun and shot into one of the rooms at the motel.

Officers Mark Ray and Dakota Faircloth soon after arrived on scene and located a person who matched the description of the person, later identified as 38-year-old Michael Johnson.

The two officers reportedly ordered Johnson to drop the gun, but he "refused to comply with the officers' commands which resulted in shots fired by one officer."

Police have not said if it was Ray or Faircloth who shot at Johnson.

At a press conference, Chief Heath Helton said that Johnson "reached into his waistband" and pulled out "what was determined to be a handgun."

Johnson would later die at a nearby hospital due to his injuries.

When asked if Johnson pointed the gun at officers, Helton said the department is analyzing body cam footage as well as surveillance video at the Days Inn.

The shooting is under investigation by the police department and both officers are currently on administrative leave.

We will update this story with more information as it becomes available.
