What we know about fatal shooting involving two Little Rock police officers

We are now learning new information from police about what happened in the deadly shooting involving two Little Rock police officers.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — After a man was shot by Little Rock police officers on Monday afternoon, Chief Heath Helton provided more details about what happened during a press conference that was held on Tuesday morning.

He explained that the man died on Monday evening.

Helton also said that two calls were made to dispatch just after 3:00 p.m. on Monday afternoon. The first caller reported shots fired near the Days Inn off Interstate 30 in Little Rock.

That caller provided a description of the man they said was firing a gun—  which was supposedly a Black male, wearing a black sweatshirt and black pants. The second caller also reported shots fired, and Helton said the caller told dispatch the man was firing into a hotel room.

"He mentioned also that the suspect had actually shot into a hotel room, which we later determined to be room 110," Helton added.

According to Helton, officers were on the scene within minutes of those calls. Once there, officers almost immediately found a man who matched the description that the callers provided.

"Officers had approached the individual, gave several verbal commands for that individual to comply," Helton said. "He refused to comply, and at one point, reached into his waistband, pulling what was determined to be a handgun."

Officers shot that man.

Helton said they gave him medical aid until he was transported to a local hospital, where he eventually succumbed to his injuries.

Chief Helton answered some questions about the details that led to the officers firing their weapons. Many questions he said he couldn't answer, as their investigation is ongoing.

We asked if that man had pointed that weapon at officers and if there was any sort of video evidence of that.

"We're analyzing all of our body camera footage and in hotel footage as well," Helton answered.

We still do not know the name of the man who was shot. Helton was also unable to provide the names of the two officers who are now on administrative leave.

He explained that they hope to release more information in the next few days.
