Little Rock School District board rejects superintendent's resignation

The Little Rock school board rejected Superintendent Jermall Wright’s resignation request and said he has to stay on for at least the remainder of the year.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — The Little Rock School Board of Education held a special meeting Thursday night.

The agenda included Superintendent Jermall Wright's resignation and the possible discipline of a school board member.

The board went into executive session for over an hour to discuss these issues. At one point, the board asked a district lawyer to come in and give advice.

They took two motions once the board was finished with the executive session.

The first was to reject Wright's resignation, which passed unanimously. The board said they will continue to work together for the remainder of the year. Then, they will have an evaluation of the superintendent to discuss any necessary changes to Wright's contract.

Wright issued a statement after the decision.

“Although we’ve made progress in many areas over the past two years, we have so much more to do," Wright said. "I am thankful to the LRSD Board of Education for providing me an opportunity to continue working to reimagine LRSD. I am also thankful and encouraged by the support received from so many of you over the last several weeks. I am excited to continue working with each of you to significantly improve outcomes for our students."

Then, the board made a second motion. They are suspending all ties with the Upward Bound Trio program as they investigate violations related to a board member.

The board member in question was not named, but is being investigated for conduct and ethics violations.
